Busy, busy weekend.

We had a show Saturday afternoon, all the gear. PA, backdrop, full instrumentation. The best part was that it was 6 blocks from home.

We brought along Reilly to run sound for us. She did a great job! The show was a trifle under attended, but that happens sometimes. Lizzie picked up Jared after the show, so he helped load everything into the house. Our living room still looks like a music store had a nervous breakdown in it. One more weekend and things can get put away for awhile. PA can get tucked into it's corner, instruments can get out of cases and onto their stands so they are easier to get at and play. Cases can get tucked away as well. Reilly has decided she wants the basement room, so her room will become the instrument room. Closed door, humidifier running all the time so we don't lose another instrument like we did last winter.

But I digress.

The best thing about the Saturday show for me was that I did most of the setup. Yeah, I am doing so much better physically now. Lizzie and Reilly did most of the tear down, and then I did most of the loading into the car. I really like being able to do things like that again.

Sunday we didn't do a lot during the day. Eventually we ended up over at the Wildflower. Julie is going to buy our old PA speakers and we both wanted to set things up to make sure they would be adequate for the job. Oh, and my very old mixing board. This was a gift from a friend ages ago. I recorded my first full length solo CD with it. It's probably been 8 years since I last used it, to make some demos for the second full length CD. It still works!

After that we met with Lyndsay about some wedding stuff, and then it was off to the open mike at The Iowa Music Store! Probably our most aggressive show. We were both in a mood and it showed. We had a blast.

I took Monday off, I tend to work 10 hour days so when we aren't traveling I can have a free day once a week. I walked to lunch, walked to get our new buttons and then walked home (because one must). It felt good, even if it kinda wore me out. I got home, collapsed on the couch and Helvetica attached himself to me for the rest of the afternoon. Sweet caretaker kitty that he is!

This morning Lizzie had to be at a meeting at 7am, so I wandered into work at 6:30. But, that means that we get home early, can get to bed early.

I have some things to mail out this week. One under some fun circumstance. I'll write more about that in a week or three.

So, how was your weekend?

comments

That was FUN !!!

A cool party out in a back yard playing music for nice folks! The weather kept threatening to do nasty things, but ended up being very kind to us. We made some new friends, played a lot of music, and had a very, very good time. What we played ...

Set 1
Disenchanted
Witch In Your Story
Lighthouse
Calvin's Girl
Hot McGonnical
Single White Monster
Out Of The Light

Set 2
Jared Coleman -
Ocean (John Butler Trio)

Cheshire Moon -
She Moved Through The Faire
Widows Garden
Stream of Consciousness
Critters
Sleep No More
Snow White Red Road
Village By The Sea

Now a few weeks off, and then we are going to Chicago!

comments

First of all, I am feeling so much better, still a little stuffed up but I can sleep again. I am still being careful. I think that the crisis is past. Thank you everyone for all of the good feelings that have come my way over the last month or so. You have all helped me so much.

This weekend Reilly has her first real dance competition of the season. The nice thing, it's about a half mile from our house, so no spending hours in the car.

In just over a week Lizzie and I are heading out to play a show in Chicago (then we have hours in the car). New music is happening. The other night Jared introduced me to a nifty new tuning, C#,G#,D#,G#,C,D#. I have a really cool new piece of music thanks to him.

Life is getting better. The last 5 weeks have been hell, but I seem to have come through it ok. Now to get back to being active again.

comments

First, our set list today.

Wanderers
The Witch In Your Story
Disenchanted
The Weaving
Catnyp
Calvins Girl
Critters
Snow White, Red Road
Village By The Sea

We had the inimitable Andy Anda on stage with us today. This may have been the best show we have played together. Everything just locked. Also, this was the first show in almost a year that I played standing up. It felt wonderful.

The rest of the day ...

We took off from Ames around 9:30 this morning. As soon as we were done we threw instruments into cases and ran them to the car and took off home since Jared's band Underdog Story were playing at The Space For Ames. We arrived with minutes to spare. They tore the place up. They have a new drummer who has added a lot to the band. And Jonah is playing rhythm guitar now, which adds a lot to the sound.

Now we are home. We are done. Tomorrow is rehearsal for the CD with John Conlan and Jared. But first, LOTS of sleep.

comments

Lizzie and I stayed home Friday. The cats had a vets appointment and Lizzie had her usual checkup. Kitties were good, albeit grumpy about the trip and the shots. They did forgive us pretty quickly.

Friday night we went to the Pizza Night at the middle school with WSPA-3. Much fun was had. We saw her at the beginning and the end (since she's like that). Then we went home and collapsed. The young man had tech crew for the school play, and then food after at Perkins (or The Club as Ed Christianson used to call it, we still miss you so much).

Friday night I decided to not sleep much, and to be wide awake at about 8:30 in the morning. This after several valiant efforts to get back to sleep. WSPA-3 had dance during the day, Jared had tech again that night and Ames British Foods had their Guy Fawkes night at a friend's farm. We ended up having lunch in the middle of the afternoon and headed out to the country to watch things burn.

Shortly after we got there Marcus made a comment about maybe having some tunes later, so putting instruments in the car was the right idea. We played a few songs, can't remember which at the moment.

I went to bed seriously early and had pretty much the same night I had on Friday. We were supposed to rehearse with Susan Sunday afternoon, but cancelled out, since Lizzie didn't have all that much better of a night. Jared had made his way over to his Grandma's after the cast party and WSPA-3 was going shopping with her Mom. So we had the house to ourselves early.

We ended up watching Silverado and then I went to bed around 8. I slept pretty well. Lizzie had had a rough day so she came to bed later.

Today Lizzie is home, the doctor needed bloodwork and had neglected to tell her that for the Friday appointment. I hauled myself out of bed and off to work, where things have been ugly all day.

comments
