Indeed. My strat clone is something of a "fat strat" with a humbucker in the bridge position. I really want a Les Paul Custom Black Beauty because it was the one my dad owned.
I have three Teles. The first (the one I use the most) is a Standard, the second has P-90s, and the third has a humbucker up front and a single coil at the bridge.
I think that makes you a Tele guy more than a single-coil guy! Some guys are absolute freaks about Teles and don't play anything else.
Next time you're in town, stop by... there's a Tele bridge pickup I'd like you to have. It's a Bill Lawrence Keystone, the one I used all over Beth's album. Great pickup, but since I switched to EMGs I'm not using it.
I like the sound of the single coil. When I was shopping for an electric, I was fairly certain I wanted a Tele, just cause I find the shape comfortable. I thought about the Deluxe, but didn't like the sound I was getting with the humbuckers. P-90s are single coils as well. The other Tele lives at home and is used mostly by the WSPA.
And that's why all my bandmates lobby for me to play the Tele. :} The Keystone is a plain old Tele-style single coil, but it's just magical-sounding. Alas, I can't stand hum, so I switched to the EMGs and I'm enjoying the blissful quiet. EMG Tele pickups are actually really great! It's 90% as good as the Keystone in the bridge, which makes it better than 95% of the Tele pickups I've heard, AND it doesn't hum. But it's EMG-ugly, sigh.
Anyway, the Keystone is yours if you want it. One of the best traditional Tele bridge pickups I've ever heard, and the best I've owned.
My JB Player strat 'clone' has the humbucker at the bridge as well. I usually just leave it on that when I play and never use the single coils. I like the 'look' of the Les Paul, but dislike the 10 lbs of wood hanging from my shoulder. So I'm an SG kinda guy. Of course the fact Tony Iommi and Angus favor SG's doesn't hurt either.
The Strat clone I was playing saturday has a bridge humbucker. The neck pickup may look like a humbucker, but it's actually a single-coil in a humbucker housing.
Les Paul Black Beauties are weird to play. They're called "fretless wonders" due to the REALLY low frets. Those who like 'em, love 'em. But if you want one, save up the dough and get one! Having a guitar you love makes a big difference.
