They didn't get called the Addams Family till the 60s when the TV show came about. The cartoons started in the New Yorker (I think) in the 20s. The story goes that Addams knew my brother's family (who were old New England money till they lost it in the crash) and stayed with them once in the mid 20s. No one knows if this is true or not, but I prefer to think it is. I only met his Grandmother twice, but she was nowhere near as normal as the folks in the old cartoons.
