The way I feel today

The Last DJ

Well you cant turn him into a company man
you cant turn him into a whore
and the boys upstairs just dont understand anymore

well the top brass dont like him talking so much
and he wont play what they say to play
and he dont want to change what dont need to change

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
says what he wants to say
hey, hey, hey
There goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
There goes the last DJ

Some folks say they're gonna hang him so high
cause you just cant do what he did
there's some things you just cant put in the minds of these kids

As we celebrate mediocrity
all the boys upstairs want to see
how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
says what he wants to say
hey, hey, hey
There goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
There goes the last DJ

Well he got him a station down in Mexico
Sometimes it'll kinda come in
and i'll bust a move and remember how it was back then

There goes the last DJ
who plays what he wants to play
says what he wants to say
hey, hey, hey
There goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
There goes the last DJ

hear hear!

The irony is that it then went into heavy rotation on Drive 105, the Twin Cities' Disney-owned rock station *heh*.

It got fairly heavy rotation in the chicago area too but only XRT had DJs with enough gumption to comment on it...(they were in unanimous agreement with mr. petty...)

my favorite Petty-ism is the song "you don't know" from his previous album I believe.

the lyric goes "well lemme get to the point/let's roll another joint..."

in chicago, they played that.

elsewhere they played "well lemme get to the point/let's hit another joint..."

I'm sure Tom was giggling all the way to the bank that the "sanitized version" kept its reference. I won't even get into "Last dance with mary jane"...
