We went to the Vinyl Cafe Open Mic Sunday night. It is the successor to Open Mic at The Space For Ames, which was also called the Ames Progressive at one point.

Lizzie and I went in front of an audience for the first time as Cheshire Moon at the Ames Progressive ... 5 years ago to the day. That time we played 4 songs, 3 covers and an original, this time we played 2 songs.

Witch In Your Story
Disenchanted

Five Years!

it's been quite the ride so far, here is to many, many more!
ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
We went to play a few songs at the Ames Progressive open mike tonight. It went very well. We got a few nice words from folks after, and a lot of applause during. We played ...

Follow That Road (Anne Hills)
Swamp Witch (Jim Stafford)
She Moved Through The Faire (Trad)
Widow's Garden (Cheshire Moon)

We will go back next week with an acoustic set.

As always, please check our our website and Facebook page. We will get the couple of songs with bad mixes fixed as soon as we can get some new recording done, probably after Duckon.

We may hit the open mike at Billy Joes Tuesday, depends on the WSPA.

but that was ok

Only Coffee House In Town
FPN
WYSIWYG
Bang My Bald Spot
Hides

The intro to Hides never quite gelled, but the rest went well, I blanked on some stuff for WYSIWYG but no one was laughing anyway.

Good practice

The highlight of the evening was a duo called My Dear Alan Andrews, really lovely laid back country folk blues sort of early 70s singer songwriter stuff. I now own their CD, and what I have heard is great.

So, I played last night. Most of the audience (7 of them) were there to see the other act

I made one bad choice of song, but played a pretty solid half hour set.

Trophy Wife
Hey Dad (shoulda stuck with snappy stuff)
FPN (a new parody that I will not name yet, since I still want to ambush some audiences with it)
How Can I Miss You?
Nice Guys

I played pretty well, sang ok, and actually remembered most of the words.

Now I am off to the Ames Progressive open mike, I intend to play a lot in the coming weeks, I really need to.

Tonight

New Dawn Fades (Joy Division)
Nice Guys

As seems to be the norm at this open mike, there was a young woman right in the front who scowled at me the entire time (and it's a different one every time).

As for tomorrow, I've been thinking about this for about 6 months now.

I have three shows booked right now between now and the end of the year. I have OSFest, Conestota and Archon, after which I think there will be no solo shows for some time, if at all.

I want to write the remaining third of another CD. I have about 2/3rds written now, but writing doesn't seem to be something I can do at the moment. If I get a new CD done I may start playing out after the first of the year again. I'll see if I can get into Marscon if I have a set of new funny material at that time, but that doesn't look likely.

I'll still show up at cons when I can and play in the circles, but that will probably depend on Toyboat, which will hopefully fill the urge.

I hope that this is a break, but if it's not, it's been a great 8 years, thanks.

I went to the open mike. As expected, school being out and all, there were very few people there. I played a safety set, something I need to stop doing. Mostly I need to get some new songs written.

Standards
Low Self Esteem
Crank Generation
Hey Dad (I've been doing that one a lot lately)
How Can I Miss You?
Ghosts

A couple of the folks in the audience tended to stare at me a little baffled, but that's pretty common. I had a nice time.
ericcoleman: (Default)
In Crosby Park
Hand Above The Water
Home Again
Only Coffee House In Town
Hey Dad
Ghosts
How Can I Miss You?
Hides

I think that was it. I made up a list of a bunch of songs and picked as I went along. It was a good set. The first three songs were all on the 12 string, and went ok.
Someone was filming it, so some of these may end up on You Tube in a few weeks.

Speaking of which ... does anyone have film of WSPA2 and myself at Marscon ... I really would like to see it.

I went to the open mike. Yeah, bout time I did again. I've been a little busy.

Let's see if I can dredge what I played out of my skull

Hey Dad
Crank Generation
Color Of Your Eyes (the ultra fast mix)
How Can I Miss You?
Bang My Bald Spot

I think that was it.

And I'm playing tonight. 8pm. amesprogressive.org

I will be at the Ames Progressive Office a week from tonight. 8 pm

I did a serious set tonight at the open mike and my oh my did it feel good.

One I Chased Away
Things You Never Know
Perfect Moments
Roman Wall Blues (Auden/Harvey)
Shake That Thing (Alex Harvey)

I have not played Shake That Thing in front of an audience since my house concert at the Palatine Air Park sometime about a 100 years ago. I had problems placing the rhythm right here and there (hey Bo Diddley) but generally I thought it was a good version.

Perfect Moments went well, except my guitar was having some neck problems, so the note that walk up during the verses were a little muffled. I was finishing the song and thought, since I was in DADGAD, that I needed to go right into another DADGAD song, so I started wandering into Roman Wall Blues. I had my lyric book out, since the first two songs are a little dusty, and reached over with my left hand, since I was just droning on the strings, and turned the page RIGHT to Roman Wall Blues ... that was cool.

I think I said this tuesday after my set there, I'm starting to feel like a musician again. I'm not trying as hard and that feels really good. I've been feeling kinda bad about music in general lately, and the sets this week have done a lot toward setting that right. So ... (and we'll see if anyone replies this time) what sort of set should I do this weekend at Cap ...

It was a small turnout, but a very nice audience (bar one, who I will talk about shortly)

In Crosby Park
Home Again
Don't Go Home (first three on the 12 string, the rest on the Tak)
Color Of Your Eyes
Hey Dad !!!
Almost Beautiful
Pine City Motel Blues
Trophy Wife
Woman I Want
Bang My Bald Spot
How Can I Miss You?
Hides

I did a lot of serious songs and the audience seemed to like that a lot. I played VERY well, actually felt like a musician for the first time in awhile. It felt good to play the Tak, I have been ignoring him lately.

There was a woman who was sitting right down front who scowled through most of my set, and very steadfastly did NOT look at me. Since her companions seemed to like the set very much I take that as meaning that I did my job well tonight. I want strong reactions, the folk sitting there ran the gamut

And I have a show in Ames tonight ... well, I MAY have a show in Ames tonight. If it's decided to cancel, I'll let the hordes of out of town people who were going to show up know as early as I can.
ericcoleman: (Default)
Did a nice, albiet loose, little set tonight. It mostly showed that I really really need to play more acoustic guitar.

Crank Generation (by request)
WYSIWYG (ditto)
Ghosts
Woman I Want
Trophy Wife

Normally I do the last two in the opposite order, but I had no idea what I was going to do after Woman I Want, so Trophy Wife just kinda happened.

I jabbered a lot during the first two songs, but it mostly worked. It was a nice night.

I will be doing a 45 minute set there Tuesday night ... that will be fun.

I am playing in Ames this Tuesday at 8 at the Ames Progressive office

I'm playing at Capricon February 15 - 5pm in the internet cafe, as well as running Radio Capricon all weekend. More information on that soon.

I am a part of The Marscon Dementia Track - February 29 - March 2. I'm playing friday night, which means you get to hear a couple of songs that I usually don't do at cons ... be afraid, this is going to be a more ... well ... let's just say that I am dipping back into my roots a little bit

I will be at Conestoga July 25-27. According to their recent new release I am playing friday night and saturday afternoon. The other musician verified is Bland Lemon Denton, (he's the guy who wrote Buddy Holly is Alive and Well and Living on Ganamede a very silly book that I dearly love).

And of course ... The Toyboat 2008 (we'll have a name for it soon) Tour

Toyboat Shows
Demicon - May 2-4
Duckon - June 13-15
Archon - October 3-5
ericcoleman: (Default)
An Eric local show. I'm playing in my own town. How weird is that?

The folks who run the Ames Progressive newsletter have started hosting acoustic shows in their new office. There is live music there every tuesday and sunday. 8pm every sunday they are having an open mike and every tuesday they are hosting performers who will do a longer set. On Tuesday the 5th I am performing.

There is no charge for any of the shows, but donations are always welcome. The address is 118 Hayward Suite #3. It's a little tricky to find at first. It's in the offices in back and to the left of the Dominoes on Hayward.

The Ames Progressive started their open mike last night. They have a nice space and a great attitude so it was a real good time. There were probably 20 people there, but I have a feeling that it will grow as the weeks go along. I started out the evening with a short set.

Ghosts (for my Mom, since it was her birthday, she would have been 70)
Low Self Esteem
Color Of Your Eyes
Bang My Bald Spot
How Can I Miss You
Nice Guys

I tried some patter during Bang My Bald Spot, but the audience wasn't going to put up with digressions, so it was a pretty straight up musical set. I really need to practice more with the acoustic, I played well but I could have played much better.

A nice time was had. Since it started earlier I was able to stay a little longer to see the folks after me. There was a guy doing some Townes Van Zandt songs who was very good and very funny and this guy Micheal, who does these wonderfully long and literate story songs, he needs to record a CD.

Now off to work, the movie quiz will be up in about an hour.
